Google`s $10M, no, $100M Android Challenge

So does Google have anything up its sleeve, when it comes to the Android mobile communications platform?

It better have. Because expectations keep getting lowered. And Apple keeps raising the ante, at least in getting attention for new mobile applications.

According to a Forbes.com dispatch Thursday Google “will probably announce the finalists for its Android developer contest sometime in late July or early August.”

It was supposed to be July 21. But bet on the results of this second round of the challenge being August 5, based on the note posted in Googling Google on … July 19.

But a few more days is not going to grab the hype cycle back from Apple, which launched its iPhone App Store two weeks ago. That store now has, in the market, more than 500 apps that are pushing the envelope in what a mobile phone can do and doing it mostly to applause (once the phone is running on a network and when not running out of juice).

Meanwhile, Google’s $10 million Android developer challenge has anointed 50 apps as worthy of being promoted for the new set of open source phones it hopes to spawn.

But where are the phones?

Sergey and Larry get to walk around with one, purportedly. But no manufacturer has put one out there.

T-Mobile may – may — get one out this year, but Sprint Nextel, China Mobile and other makers are looking at 2009 launches.

The biggest U.S. carriers, AT&T and Verizon, seem in no rush to get behind the Android alliance. AT&T is doing just fine right now with the iPhone. And Ivan Seidenberg at Verizon says even the iPhone is not a big deal.

The challenge here is for someone to make an Android-based phone that has better hardware guts than the iPhone or better pieces to swap in and out so that developers can produce better apps than iPhone apps.

But so far, the developers are working with a developer’s kit. Not real phones, ready to bring to market.

That’s got to change, before anyone gets excited about any of the Android apps announced on August 5.

Or Google’s hopes to best Apple (or anybody else) in spawning cool or useful mobile communications.

Maybe Google needs to launch a $100 million challenge … to hardware developers, to get them excited.

Vista: Whose ‘reality’ do you believe?

The same day that Forrester Research is touting yet another of a growing number of studies claiming Vista is failing to gain traction in the enterprise, Microsoft is claiming just the opposite.

In a presentation at Microsoft’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting in Redmond on July 24, company officials outlined their bullish projections and claims for Windows Vista. But it wasn’t the facts and figures that garnered the most attention from attendees here; instead, it was a video of a focus group of Vista skeptics who changed their originally negative opinions of Microsoft’s latest Windows release once they had a chance to see it demonstrated.

Microsoft told the focus group participants that they were seeing a demo of “Mojave,” (why not “Midori”?) an as-yet-unannounced Windows release (which was actually Windows Vista). The participants, a number of whom admitted they had no direct hands-on experience with Vista, said they were jazzed about Mojave and would definitely use it once it was released.

The Mojave demo was used to back Microsoft’s contention that once they had a chance to try Vista for themselves, customers liked the product.

Forrester Research issued new study results today claiming that 18 months after release, “Vista is still struggling to gain a foothold in large companies.” Forrester called Vista the “new Coke.”

Forrester said that Vista use remains in the single digits (”just under nine percent according to Forrester’s month-by-month desk-top analysis of 50,000 of our enterprise clients across 2,300 companies. That’s up from six percent in January of this year, but far short of the 87 percent penetration for Windows XP.”)

Meanwhile, Bill Veghte, Senior Vice President for Online Services and Windows Business Group, told FAM attendees today that Vista’s uptake among business users is solid. He said Vista enterprise sales were up 20 percent and renewal rates for Software Assurance among business users were greater than 80 percent. (Not surprisingly, there were no stats in Veghte’s presentation about what percentage of business users are downgrading to XP, one of their “benefits” under the Software Assurance program.)

The answer to whether Vista is growing among enterprise users is “an emphatic yes,” Veghte said.

Veghte said that the higher end of the mid-market also is beginning to upgrade more rapidly to Vista.

Microsoft identifies the business version of Vista as Vista Enterprise, coupled with the optimized desktop (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, or MDOP). Veghte told FAM attendees that Microsoft is readying a set of new MDOP updates for later this year.

Veghte also emphasized that three quarters of Microsoft’s customers are opting for “premium” versions of Vista, rather than bare-bones, lower-priced ones (like Vista Home Basic.) He told attendees of FAM that Microsoft will be “aggressive” in getting PC makers to attached Genuine Windows (rather than pirated versions of the product) right out of the gate.

“Perception vs. reality — that’s a conversation we need to have with our customers this year,” Veghte said.

Do you agree with Microsoft Vista’s biggest challenge is perception, not performance, at this point? Or do you think Forrester is closer to reality with “Vista is the ‘new Coke’ analogy?

Microsoft finalizes Windows XP for OLPC laptops

Microsoft has internally released to manufacturing the version of Windows XP that it has tweaked to run on the One Laptop Per Child XO computer.

As James Utzschneider, General Manager of Marketing and Communications for the Unlimited Potential Group, announced on his blog on July 24:

“Windows on the XO looks like it is on track for availability in these types of national educational PC deals in September. We still have no plans to make Windows available for individuals who bought an XO in the Give 1 Get 1 program though.”

The “national educational PC deal” to which Utzschneider seemingly is referring is a deal between Intel and Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim to provide 50,000 Intel Classmate Netbooks running Windows and Office to poor students in Mexico.

Microsoft didn’t officially acknowledge that the company was working on a port of XP for the OLPC laptop until May 2008. Prior to that time, however, OLPC officials had said that such a port was in the works. Microsoft, for its part, continued to say it was testing whether it could get XP to run properly on XOs.

On May 15, Microsoft and the OLPC announced they were going to deliver Windows on XO machines, which previously were slated to run Linux only. That announcement led to complaints by Linux backers and resignations of some OLPC officials.

Back in May, Microsoft and the OLPC said to expect the offering to be released to manufacturing in August or September and to be available initially only in “emerging market countries where governments or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are subsidizing the purchase of a large number of PCs for students.” The pair noted at that time there was a “possibility of making this (XO on OLPC) available for other customers through a broader set of channels at a later point in time.”

Microsoft: Windows 7 on track

Windows unit head Bill Veghte said on Thursday that Windows 7 development remains on track.

The company has officially said it would ship by January 2010, but top executives have also said from time to time that it would be done by the end of 2009.

"The product is tracking very, very well," Veghte said. "We are committed and looking good, relative to our commitment--(shipping Windows 7) three years from general availability of Windows Vista."

Microsoft has released few details on the product, largely assuring customers that it would be making big architectural changes and that it will have a new multitouch user interface.

Most of Veghte's talk, as expected, was on Windows Vista and how Microsoft sees a large perception gap. Veghte showed the Mojave Project, first detailed here, in which users predisposed against Vista reacted favorably when shown Vista when it was presented under the guise of being a new version of Windows, code-named Mojave.

Even outside focus groups, Veghte said that not only are customers buying the operating system, but more are liking it, pointing to recent internal figures showing that 89 percent of users said they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the product. Some 83 percent said they would recommend Vista to a friend or family member, Veghte said.

He also demoed Internet Explorer 8, which he said would be released in final form later this year. An early beta was shown off at the Mix '08 trade show in the spring.
Google is taking the wraps off new internet encyclopeida

The service, dubbed "knol" in reference to a unit of knowledge, had been limited to an invitation-only audience of contributors and readers for the past seven months.

Now anyone with a Google login will be able to submit an article and, if they choose, have ads displayed through the Internet search leader's marketing system. The contributing author and Google will share any revenue generated from the ads, which are supposed to be related to the topic covered in the knol.

The advertising option could encourage people to write more entries about commercial subjects than the more academic topics covered in traditional encyclopedias.

Since Google disclosed its intention to build knol, it has been widely viewed as the company's answer to Wikipedia, which has emerged as one of the web's leading reference tools by drawing upon the collective wisdom of unpaid, anonymous contributors.

But Google views knol more as a supplement to Wikipedia than a competitor, said Cedric Dupont, a Google product manager. Google reasons that Wikipedia's contributors will be able to use some of the expertise shared on knol to improve Wikipedia's existing entries.

With a seven-year head start on knol, Wikipedia already has nearly 2.5 million English-language articles and millions more in dozens of other languages.

Knol is starting out with several hundred entries. The initial topics covered include an overview of constipation by a University of San Francisco associate professor of gastroenterology and backpacking advice from one of Google's own software engineers.

Unlike Wikipedia, knol requires the authors to identify themselves to help the audience assess the source's credibility. Google doesn't intend to screen the submissions for accuracy, Dupont said, and instead will rely on its search formulas to highlight the articles that readers believe are credible.

Google has had mixed success so far in its attempts to expand beyond its ubiquitous search engine, which generates most of its profits. While products like its e-mail service have been hits, other forays like a listing system called "Base" and a social network called Orkut haven't fared as well.
Posted: 11-Jun-2008 [Source: Nortel and Alvarion]

[Nortel and Alvarion form strategic agreement forming a complete, end-to-end WiMAX solution for each company's global customers.]

Toronto & Tel Aviv -- Nortel and Alvarion entered into a joint strategic WiMAX agreement to create an end-to-end WiMAX solution to meet the needs of the evolving wireless broadband market. The Nortel and Alvarion mobile WiMAX solution is expected to combine industry-leading technologies from both companies to allow operators around the globe - including well-established service providers and new entrants to the wireless market - to simply and efficiently deliver high-speed wireless broadband for a variety of applications, mobile or nomadic, including VoIP, streaming music, and HD video.

The joint solution features the integration of Alvarion's advanced radio access network technology, which has been proven in over 200 commercial WiMAX deployments, with Nortel's core network solutions, backhaul solutions, applications such as Nortel's number one carrier VoIP solution, and professional services. The Nortel and Alvarion WiMAX solution will allow operators to offer high speed wireless Internet access across large areas, including those currently underserved by broadband capabilities. The joint WiMAX solution will also provide the speed and capacity to help operators meet the exploding demand for true mobile broadband.

"Wireless broadband is one of the fastest growing opportunities in the telecommunications market," said Richard Lowe, president, Carrier Networks, Nortel. "Early movers in this market are looking for a high quality, turnkey WiMAX solution that delivers vast coverage in a cost-effective way and meets growing demand for true mobile broadband that can support new services like streaming music and mobile TV. The collaboration between Nortel and Alvarion will allow both companies to deliver on these needs quickly and efficiently with a world class WiMAX solution that is based on the best technology from each. The solution will also include Nortel services, ranging from network consulting, design and deployment to full network management, to help customers maximize network investments by providing the flexibility to handle changing coverage, capacity and other unique requirements."

"Nortel and Alvarion, both innovators in the wireless arena, are coming together to respond to the demand for WiMAX solutions in all regions of the world," said Tzvika Friedman, president and chief executive officer, Alvarion. "Alvarion's mature, extensively deployed WiMAX radio access network solution, together with Nortel's core network technology, applications and services will address the requirements of large WiMAX projects with the combined strength of both organizations. In keeping with our strategy of best of breed collaborations, this initiative will also allow us to tailor solutions and applications for specific customer needs. The platform offers WiMAX solutions for multiple frequency bands thus leveraging economies of scale from global deployments, expected to result in a lower cost of ownership for the customers."

The agreement also covers the resale by Nortel of the Alvarion platform of WiMAX access products in order to form the end-to-end solution for customers. Alvarion's development of its portfolio of leading-edge WiMAX base stations will be accelerated by Nortel's contribution of resources, expertise, and funding to enhance the development of the joint solution. Both companies will also work together to perform Interoperability Testing (IOT). Alvarion will focus on device to network interoperability testing and Nortel will concentrate on the end-to-end network integration with the IP core, and applications. In order to incentivize the parties to engage in these activities, during the term of the agreement, Alvarion will be Nortel's exclusive supplier of WiMAX IEEE 802.16e base stations and both parties have agreed to designate account leads in order to go to market in the most efficient and effective manner.

Mobile 3.0 begins offering mobile TV and radio in four German cities

Munich -- Germany's Mobile 3.0 is offering high-quality broadcasts of television and radio channels to users on the move, having launched a test service based on a mobile television solution from Nokia Siemens Networks.

The service, initially available in four German cities - Hamburg, Hanover, Frankfurt and Munich - includes nine TV channels (ARD, ZDF, Deutschland 24, RTL, VOX, SAT 1, Pro 7, N-TV and N24) and three radio stations (bigMUSIC, MyFun Radio, and 90elf). It will help gather information on actual demand, expected consumption patterns, coverage and reception conditions in order to fine-tune the broadcasts and identify commercial services to be launched in the future, once Mobile 3.0 receives all the remaining licenses.

During the test, Nokia Siemens Networks is fully hosting, operating and integrating its mobile TV solution, which is based on the Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld (DVB-H) standard. The platform processes the content and provides the data stream to the broadcast network operator, while Nokia is supplying end-user terminals.

"Mobile TV in DVB-H standard is becoming reality in Germany," said Dr. Rudi Groeger, President of Mobile 3.0. "With the Nokia Siemens Networks complete solution and their services we have been able to launch this service in a very short time."

To achieve optimum results, Nokia Siemens Networks has been working closely with Mobile 3.0 to meet various challenges - in connectivity, efficiency, quality assurance and revenue generation. The DVB-H solution includes a broad range of services like system design, installation and integration. Nokia Siemens Networks also will host the system in its European hosting center and will be responsible for operation and maintenance.

"With our end-to-end capabilities for DVB-H solutions and our service capabilities to provide a fully managed and hosted system, we will support Mobile 3.0 to drive DVB-H in Germany," said Hartmut Mueller-Leitloff, head of Nokia Siemens Networks business operations in Central Europe.

Nokia Siemens Networks' DVB-H solution is based on open standards and requires little time to implement. Its end-to-end capability combines the equipment, services and devices to create a unique solution for full DVB-H rollout. This gives Nokia Siemens Networks a leading position to help its customers meet market demands in the best way.

Nokia Siemens Networks already works with more than 30 operators worldwide on DVB-H implementations. Its commercial launches include Finland, Switzerland, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.
